Immigration Procedures in Ecuador

Work Visas

Foreign nationals are required to secure temporary work visas to engage in lawful employment within Ecuador. These visas are renewable and are valid for one to two years, based on the discretion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Visa for Employment Contract: This visa type allows foreign nationals to join an Ecuadorian company's local payroll and sign an employment agreement.

Visa for Assignment: This allows individuals to work while being compensated by an overseas company.

Visa for Legal Representation: This is designed for individuals who need to execute temporary legal roles, such as managers or attorneys, in an Ecuadorian business. Permanent Residency

Permanent resident visas are available to foreign nationals who've been temporary residents for a minimum of 21 months. These visas permit the holder to gain Ecuadorian identification and make employment choices without altering their immigration status.

Required Documentation

Common documentation requirements for both temporary and permanent visas include:

  • Filled-out application forms
  • Valid passport with at least six months remaining
  • Criminal history records
  • Proof of financial sustainability
  • Records from Ecuador's Ministry of the Interior

Specific additional documents are required based on the type of temporary visa applied for, such as an assignment letter or a training agreement between companies for those under the assignment category.
